Classic Kansas City BBQ Rub

Kansas City boasts well over 100 BBQ joints across the city, many of them garnering national recognition and prestigious awards. K.C. is home to the “low and slow” method of cooking and, as such, they tend to keep their rubs pretty straightforward. This rub contains everything that one would expect to be in a BBQ rub, but nothing more; brown sugar, paprika, garlic, and onion, just to name a few.


  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup paprika
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper


Combine all ingredients in a glass bowl and whisk until fully incorporated. The rub is ready for immediate use or can be stored, in an air tight container, for up to one year.
