Hot Mustard and Bourbon BBQ Sauce
This sauce is bound to make the Bluegrass state proud! Why you ask, because it has bourbon in it! This sauce comprised of mustard, vinegar, and bourbon and is ideal for chicken, pork, and mutton; yes, I said mutton. This recipe is very simple to put together, unique in taste, and holds for a long time in the frig. Enjoy!
- 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1.2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup bourbon
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 cup yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon whole grain Dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoon molasses
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- Zest of one lemon
In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil and sweat the onions and garlic until the onions are translucent.
Add the bourbon and reduce by half.
Add the vinegar, hot sauce, soy sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, and lemon zest; bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes.
Add the yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, honey, and molasses; return to a simmer for 5 minutes; stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and let stand until room temperature.
It is ready for use or can be stored in the frig for up to one month. Enjoy!
